I like the idea of grunge and decay. I think in ways, this type of art is much more interesting than the mainsteam bright colours that I have been using previously. I want my work to appear more dark and mysterious!

I like the use of peeling and folding back. This is an image I found and I want to create a painting using much texture and mixed media in order to portay this.

I found an artist today , Elizabeth Chapman, who I feel will be relevant to my next works! She uses subtle tones, with even hints of figurative works. I like this style. I am not a figurative drawer, however I may try a different direction and draw abstract forms of a figure! I feel I need to expland my art and the way I work.

My next plans for my paintings is to have more of a direction. I want to now look and use more subtle, dark colours which I think can pull the viewer in, and adds more subtle interest, rather than my recent works which are very in your face. I am looking at Michel Keck again and I like this particular style of painting which I found.

I like how it has dashes of brighter colours, which add a surprise element!

These two paintings I painted from photographs of surfaces such as walls and bricks. I put lots of detail and textures and added sugar for effect! After looking at them, I can see now they come across as landscapes which was interesting!

Newer works I will post today. After having a group tutorial, I have taken into consideration some of the comments, such as using a smaller and more controlled colour palette! I get a bit carried away with colour!

What and who have inspired me?

I have been researching artists that work with collage, mixed media and paint to produce interesting, textured, abstract images. Such artists include Michel Keck, and Leslie Avon Miller, who are open to all types of artistic experimentation.

The images below focus on the elements of collage, colour and texture. I was very inspired by an artist, Michel Keck, who creates extremely engaging, powerful images, which explore these themes. Some of these are done on raw cardboard and some on white card. I intend to experiment with a lot more of these types of images!

Growing up as an Artist

I have always been interested in design, but throughout my years at school, I started to become very interested in art and appreciate all the different types that were available. In 2006, I attended Cardonald College to attend a portfolio preparation course, in which to build up a portfolio to submit to an art school.
Throughout this year, I gained much experience and learned many new techniques. Before attending this course, my views on what 'art' was, was very limited, and this opened me up to a much broader understanding on what 'art' and was could be defined as 'art' was.
There were three main projects throughout the year. The first being a fine art project which was concerned with plants and natural forms. The second was a design project, and the third was a personal project in which we explored an issue of our choice. My chosen issue was homelessness.
Along with these were extra drawing projects, and I also took a life drawing class, which taught me a lot about the importance of dimensions, proportion and the way in which the figure is produced.
After a very interesting year, I submitted my portfolio and gained entrance to Dundee Art School. However, I chose to attend the University of Leeds to pursue one of my other passions which was fashion! Although some aspects of the course I enjoyed, I was not partial to the pattern and construction making which was one of the key elements. I realised that my way of working would not work when it came to the construction. I am not a very particular person. I work by using my mistakes as a learning curve. In art, my 'accidents' often become part of the painting.
After careful consideration, I opted to change to Art and Design, and start again as an artist. So that brings me to the present day, a second year student studying art and design and I love it!
